The Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), a national initiative aimed at boosting livestock farming and improving resilience to climate challenges in Nigeria, is working closely with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet). As part of efforts to support data-driven livestock productivity, L-PRES focuses on providing farmers with resources and information to help them adapt to unpredictable weather conditions.

During a courtesy visit, Mr. Sanusi Abubakar, National Coordinator of L-PRES, met with Prof. Charles Anosike, Director General and CEO of NiMet. The visit featured the handover of four Automatic Weather Observation Systems (AWOS) to NiMet.

Mr. Abubakar congratulated Prof. Anosike on the recent public release of the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction, highlighting NiMet’s pivotal role in supporting agriculture. He emphasized that partnering with NiMet is essential for L-PRES to achieve its goal of building resilience across Nigeria’s livestock sector.

Anosike commended L-PRES for its initiative to procure and donate the AWOS units, describing the contribution as a vital investment in Nigeria’s weather observation network. He explained that the new stations will be installed in rehabilitated grazing reserves across the country, enabling accurate, localized weather monitoring that will help livestock farmers make informed decisions and ultimately increase productivity.

Looking ahead, both L-PRES and NiMet expressed their commitment to continued collaboration. By leveraging innovative technology and shared expertise, the partnership aims to safeguard Nigeria’s livestock industry against climate risks, improve farmers’ livelihoods, and promote sustainable agricultural growth for years to come.
